Integrated vs. Non-Integrated SPDs

An interesting article in the July/August issue of Electrical Line compares two choices for hard wired surge protection devices (SPDs). Panel board manufacturers have been selling the benefits of internally mounted units for years.

Non-Integrated SPDs are mounted off to the side of panel boxes. This configuration actually offers several advantages over integrated units. With proper installation, it's possible for an externally mounted SPD to be tapped to the bus or occupy a breaker postion close to the Neutral and Ground Bus. This provides shorter overall system lead length, which will allow for better performance to an integrated SPD.

Non-Integrated SPDs also offer some servicing advantages. The repair or replacement of an externally mounted SPD does not require the shut down of the entire panel.

Lightning Protection

Lightning Protection

TPS Canada has added lightning rods to compliment our line of surge protectors.

More than 2,000 lightning flashes occur every minute. Normally, this lightning discharges harmlessly in the atmosphere, but when it strikes the ground, it can cause considerable damage to property. Injuries are possible, even loss of life.

TPS Canada provides world-leading products that divert lightning ground strikes and prevent damage to buildings, property and people.

Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS)

All TPS panel mount units are RoHS compliant. This is good for the enviroment since the units do not contain lead and certain other hazardous chemicals. Since July 1, 2006, European countries in the European Union must require that various types of Electrical and Electronic components sold there be RoHS Compliant. We expect that this standard will soon be adoped in the USA. Some companies are already asking for the RoHS compliance certification.

RoHS is often referred to as the lead-free directive, but it restricts the use of the following six substances:

  1. Lead
  2. Mercury
  3. Cadmium
  4. Hexavalent chromium
  5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)*
  6. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)*

*PBB and PBDE are flame retardants used in several plastics.
